His Royal Highness The Prince David of Georgia was invited to witness the historic proclamation of King Felipe VI as King of Spain, following the abdication of his dearly beloved father, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I, who played a historic role in steering Spain to its modern democratic status.

The proclamation, which included King Felipe’s oath to the Spanish Constitution, took place in front of the assembled Cortes Generales, in the Congress of Deputies in Madrid.  It was attended by the head of the Spanish government, ministers, and lawmakers, alongside with a select choice of distinguished guests. 


The Georgian Royal Family have a special bond with Spain as they were afforded asylum by the Spanish Regency and later, the Kingdom when the Soviets imposed communist oppression on their country and forced them to go into exile. 
The Prince David of Georgia, who resided for a considerable amount of time in Spain, recalled his fondness and deference for the previous King, Juan Carlos I, and his gratitude to the King’s generosity in hosting the Georgian Royal Family in his Kingdom until it was again safe for them to return to Georgia.

Prince David sent his warm, heartfelt congratulations to King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia, wishing them a long, peaceful and prosperous Reign, and asked for God’s guidance to help them to lead their subjects forward in difficult and trying economic time.
